Homemade Saltwater Taffy
Ingredients
2 cups granulated sugar
2/3 cup light corn syrup
3/4 cup water
1/4 tsp salt
2 tbsp unsalted butter
1 tsp vanilla extract (or other flavoring of choice)
1/2 tsp food coloring (optional)
Directions
Prepare Your Work Area
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or butter a large heatproof surface.
Butter your hands and a pair of kitchen scissors for later use.
Cook the Taffy Base
In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, water, and salt over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
Once dissolved, stop stirring and allow the mixture to boil. Insert a candy thermometer and cook until it reaches 255°F (hard ball stage).
Add Flavor & Color
Remove the pan from heat and immediately stir in butter, vanilla extract (or other flavoring), and food coloring.
Pour the hot mixture onto the prepared baking sheet and let it cool until it’s warm but still pliable (about 10 minutes).
Pull the Taffy
Once the taffy is cool enough to handle, butter your hands and begin pulling it. Stretch and fold the taffy repeatedly for about 10-15 minutes until it becomes light in color and firm.
If making multiple flavors, separate and add extracts accordingly before pulling each batch.
Shape & Cut
Roll the taffy into long ropes and use buttered kitchen scissors to cut into bite-sized pieces.
Wrap each piece in wax paper to prevent sticking.
Enjoy!
Store in an airtight container at room temperature. Your homemade saltwater taffy will stay fresh for up to two weeks.
